“The faithful who gather together to await the Lord’s coming are instructed by the Apostle Paul to sing together psalms, hymns and inspired songs” – Colossians 3:16 –
Through our music ministry, we strive to meet the needs of our parishioners by creating a beautiful, prayerful and supportive musical environment for our liturgical Masses and events. Whether it be the joy of a wedding, consolation at a funeral, or the varied Masses of the liturgical year, our ministry is there for the subtle, yet profound support and expression of prayerful intent and the beauty of God’s great gift of music.
Cantors lead the congregation in song at all liturgies. The psalmist proclaims scripture and prayer (the responsorial psalm, gospel acclamation, prayers of the faithful) and the cantor leads the assembly in the singing of the hymns and the Ordinary of the Mass. The ministry is open to youth and adults who exhibit a strong and pleasant voice. Cantors can participate as frequently or as infrequently as possible. Contact any of the Parish Music Directors to sign up.
Today's choir fulfills the same unique ministry as the ancient schola; to enhance the prayer experience of the assembly gathered at liturgy. Often, choir members are not trained musicians. The members usually have a love of music, a good ear and a pleasant voice that blends well with others. Our parish choirs rehearse separately and sing for masses in all of our worship sites. Holy Martyrs and Holy Family churches share a parish choir, and St. Alphonsus and Our Lady of Victory have a similar arrangement. Several times per year, the choirs combine for special liturgies, such as Confirmation for our grouping. Some of our parishes have hosted children’s choirs as well.
Complementing the Parish Choir, the parish is blessed to have instrumentalists that add a distinct “voice” to the liturgy. If you have played a musical instrument in the past, this is a good way to get back into playing! We especially have a need for brass, woodwind, and string players.
Our Lady of Victory has historically hosted a handbell choir, with two octaves of Malmark Handbells. The bells of the church raise their voices to call worshipers to celebrate communal prayer, herald weddings, toll for funerals, ring the canonical hours, announce the elevation of the host, and proclaim the Gloria. Our handbell choir adds another voice to its family of bells. At present, our handbell choir is inactive, but we want to rebuild with our combined parish family!
